the blessing of breathing

So far I am 4 for 4 on my thankfulness for the month of November. Granted, we are only on day 5, but I am counting it as a small victory. I'm thinking of putting all the instagrams together in a little mini, having my boys add to it a bit as well.

One thing I am certainly thanking God for is breathing. Deep breath in. Let it out. A few weeks ago my littlest came down with croup in the middle of the night. This is never good and it's made even more complicated because he has infection triggered asthma. He very rarely gets "just" a cold. We do breathing treatments A LOT, especially this time of year. He's a pro.

By 5 am we were doing our breathing treatments, but it wasn't seeming to help.

By 9 am we were at the doctor's office for more breathing treatments and a prescription for meds.

By 2 pm I was calling 911 because my littlest was struggling to breathe. I can't even begin to explain how horrible this was. There really are no words. That is the worst feeling I have ever had in my life. I have never been so scared. I never want to experience it again.
And of course, my husband is out of town.
An ambulance ride to the hospital and then more breathing treatments. In the middle of the first night he was given a medicine that he had a reaction to. It made his breathing worse. A doctor was paged in at 2 am and told us we might be heading to pediatric ICU. I didn't care where we were as long as he was getting better.
The morning of day three I knew he was doing better when he started shaking his bare booty in his little hospital gown at the nurses ;) That's my boy.

This time of year we always stop and reflect on all that we have to be thankful for. It's so easy to take the little things for granted. Like breathing deep. I do it all the time and never think about that blessing. Never again. 30 days of thankfulness. I need to do this every day of the year.

  1. Just when the devil sees you celebrating your 'Thankfulness' he tries to throw a wrench in there! And you've come through standing tall despite it all. Glad your little guy is feeling better and continued blessing throughout the month to you and your family!

  4. My son has asthma, too, and I understand how scary an event like that is. This is our "aggravated" season, too. One year he was on a bad-tasting oral steroid and it was time to take it...right after a big Thanksgiving dinner....well, you can guess what happened next. We can laugh about it now. Blessings to you and your family.
